Fraud and insider trading charges against two Texas billionaires have created a political snag for the GOP. Samuel and Charles Wyly, brothers who founded Sterling Software and sold it for nearly $4 billion in 2000, have contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to Republican candidates in recent years. The Securities and Exchange Commission has charged them with running a stock fraud scheme that earned $550 million.

U.S. District Judge Nancy Atlas of the Southern District of Texas today denied R. Allen Stanford's motion to disqualify Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld from representing the defendants in Stanford's insurance-coverage suit. In a Memorandum and Order , Atlas wrote that she is "sensitive" to preventing conflicts of interest, but "Stanford, however, has failed to satisfy his burden to demonstrate he personally was a former client of Akin Gump and has also waived any alleged conflict that may have existed." This can't be much of a surprise. The Wyly Brothers and Allen Stanford -- both Texas based, with a fondness for offshore financial dealings -- have a connection. Louise J. Schauffele, a broker who worked on behalf of the Dallas-based brothers, also worked for Stanford.
